Three years on from 2018’s Polychrome, Bristol duo KOAN Sound break their silence with Chronos, a four-track EP that doubles as both a return and their debut on Vision Recordings. It’s a concise, cinematic suite of glitch-hop that finds the pair refining the orchestral-meets-neuro sound they’ve been perfecting for years—strings and brass arranged against fractured beats and basslines that twist and writhe in the lower register.
The EP’s character is defined by its sound design, which is typically immaculate. Every element is placed with surgical precision: reverb tails curl around the drums, foley and texture sit deep in the mix, and the neuro-influenced bass stays muscular without ever smothering the melodies above it. It’s music that rewards a good pair of headphones, the kind of record where a new detail surfaces on every listen.
Title track Chronos opens with swelling, filmic strings before a half-time drop sends shuddering bass through the floor. Red Shift is the darkest moment here, its tense, stripped-back beat and cavernous atmospherics lending the record a real sense of menace. Traverse lightens the mood, layering bright synth leads and intricate percussion into the EP’s most overtly melodic moment, whilst closer Aeon builds gradually into a grand, sprawling finale that feels like the credits rolling.
Chronos isn’t a reinvention—the pair’s fingerprints are all over it—but it doesn’t need to be. As a first statement for a new label it’s a confident, characterful return that confirms KOAN Sound remain masters of their craft. Short, dense and endlessly rewarding, it’s well worth the three-year wait.
