Tabula Rasa

The identity behind Katatonic Silentio remains stubbornly anonymous—no photos, no press shots, just a string of records on Delsin and Midnight Shift that established a quiet knack for dub-soused, bass-first electronics. Tabula Rasa is the project’s debut for the Zenker Brothers’ Ilian Tape, a six-track EP whose Latin title—“blank slate”—suits a producer content to let the music do all the talking.

The record’s character sits somewhere between dub reggae’s weightless space and the spring-loaded low-end of UK bass. Opening track Shy Fy slips in with muffled, off-grid percussion and a sub that hums rather than thumps, the mix left hazy and unforced. When You Think It’s Over tightens the groove, its four-to-the-floor kick sitting beneath delayed stabs and a bassline that lurches forward in syncopation, whilst On The Edge Of Unthought State drifts furthest into the ether, percussion smeared across a wide reverb. Midnight Train Breaking Through is the most obviously dancefloor-facing moment, its rolling hats and warped vocal fragments recalling the label’s own lineage, before the title track pulls things back into shadow. Closer Cartography Of Nowhere earns its nine minutes, building patiently from a lone pulse into a slow, billowing meditation that ends the EP not with a bang but a deep exhale.

What elevates the record above much of its scene is the attention paid to its edges. Mastering by Tangible Air gives every track room to breathe, the low end cushioned rather than crushed, whilst Bettina Zenker’s oil-on-canvas cover—a smear of molten colour against darkness—extends the sense of a record that exists in its own weather system.

Tabula Rasa is a confident, unhurried statement from an artist who clearly knows exactly what they’re doing. It’s not a record that demands attention; it rewards it, revealing new depth in the spaces between each rumble and delay. For a label built on pushing the fringes of techno, Katatonic Silentio feels like a natural fit—and this is a debut that merits plenty of revisits.
