Few producers have done more to demystify microtonal music than Sevish, the Scottish educator whose website and YouTube channel have spent years making one of electronic music’s most intimidating corners feel welcoming. Bubble, his new album—self-released on New Year’s Day as part of Bandcamp Friday—is his most direct case yet for microtonality as music you can simply enjoy: eight tracks of playful, tuneful IDM that wear their cleverness lightly.

For the uninitiated: Western music usually splits the octave into twelve equal semitones, the steps underpinning everything from pop to techno. Microtonal music uses more divisions, and Sevish’s favoured 22-EDO squeezes twenty-two notes into the same space, so his melodies seem to bend and shimmer in ways you can’t quite place—disorienting at first, delicious once it clicks. Crucially, his scales are chosen for sweetness rather than abrasiveness. This is microtonality with a pop sensibility, closer to a music box than a maths lecture.

The record opens with Plot Hole, a burbling marimba-like lead skipping over soft, swung percussion in seven minutes of gently hypnotic charm. You Tell Me and Some Things Must lean towards the dancefloor, the latter’s four-to-the-floor pulse and warm sub-bass anchoring dreamy, detuned chords. Fuschiamarine is the sunniest moment, a squelchy shuffle that practically bounces, whilst Starfish drifts on slow pads and a chiming melody. Dream Up adds gentle swing and wordless vocal snippets, and the brief Some Things Must Reprise winks at its parent track before ten-and-a-half-minute closer Almighty Fractal builds from tumbling glitch into a hypnotic, reverb-soaked finale.

What makes Bubble impressive is how accessible it all is. The microtonal theory is the engine, but the record runs on melody and warmth—hooks you hum, rhythms that move, pads that feel like a deep breath. Sevish’s achievement is making a radical tuning system sound like the most natural thing in the world, and for anyone who ever feared the maths, this is the friendliest door in.
