London duo Two Thou arrive on Gifted Culture with Help Your Soul / Where Are We Going, a two-track single that captures the label’s Franco-British identity in miniature. Gifted Culture may be young, but its cross-Channel collective spirit—shuttling between UK breaks and French techno across its early releases—has already earned it a devoted following, and this record was picked out by Bandcamp Daily as one of May’s finest. Two tracks, two scenes, one very promising label.
Opening cut Help Your Soul is the heart of the record: a soulful, jazz-tinged drum & bass workout whose swung, syncopated breaks roll beneath warm Rhodes chords and a vocal that floats rather than preaches. The bassline is the quiet star—round and melodic, it weaves between the drums instead of fighting them—whilst the pads open up during the breakdown to give the track room to breathe before the breaks tighten again for the final push. Across its four and a half minutes, it’s a masterclass in letting groove and harmony share the same space.
The flip finds French producer Chevel taking Where Are We Going and stepping it down into his signature dubbed-out techno space. Gone are the breaks; in their place a patient four-to-the-floor pulse, cavernous reverb and delays that swallow every note, and a bassline which dissolves into echo at each turn. The vocal fragments become ghostly, half-remembered things, and the whole track sounds like a tune played at the far end of a vast concrete room, dub reggae’s shadow falling long across the floor. It’s a bold recontextualisation—the same soul, remapped for a very different dancefloor.
It’s that contrast which makes the single such a satisfying listen: Two Thou’s warmth and musicality on one side, Chevel’s restraint and space on the other, and Gifted Culture as the bridge between them. Neither track outshines the other—they’re two perspectives on the same feeling, and the record is stronger for holding both at once. If this is the standard the label is setting, its rise is very easy to understand.
