For the best part of a decade, Hanoi collective Rắn Cạp Đuôi—whose name translates as “banded krait”, a snake whose bite attacks the nervous system—have been forging a strange, unclassifiable sound from the rubble of Vietnamese pop and the fringes of experimental electronics. Ngủ Ngày Ngay Ngày Tận Thế (“Sleeping By Day On The Day The World Ends”) is their debut full-length, and its arrival on Subtext marks one of the most genuinely international underground stories of 2021: eight tracks of ghost-ship drone, mutilated vocal samples and slow kosmische drift that feel broadcast from a half-collapsed future.
The record opens in fog. Images (3:28) settles into a deep, sub-aquatic drone bed, its surface scratched by faint metallic shimmer and what sounds like distant radio interference; nothing moves quickly, but the texture feels alive, breathing. Eri Eri Eri Eri Eri Rema Rema Rema Rema Rema (3:27)—its title lifted from the closing incantation of Beckett’s The Unnamable—stretches that drone over gently detuned pulses, the mood shifting imperceptibly from stillness to unease. Distant People (4:12) comes closest to song: a procession of corroded tones and cavernous reverb that could almost be a pop record heard from the bottom of a well.
It’s on Mực Nang (4:15) and Aztec Glue (3:18) that the collective’s treatment of Vietnamese pop vocals comes to the fore. Fragments of melody surface and are immediately smeared, pitched down and dragged through thick layers of reverb and distortion until they register as artefacts rather than voices—mournful, ghostly, impossible to place. The effect is closer to excavation than remixing, as if the group are unearthing songs rather than writing them.
The final stretch tightens the focus. Infinite (2:53) is the album’s most rhythmic moment, a dusty pulse and muffled percussion rolling beneath a haze of pads, while Denial and Caves (2:17) dissolves into near-silence before Đme Giựt Mồng (3:19) closes on a long, sighing exhale that leaves the room feeling emptier than when the record began.
Ngủ Ngày Ngay Ngày Tận Thế is not an easy listen, but it is a masterful one—an album that rewards patience with genuine depth and positions Rắn Cạp Đuôi as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary experimental music. For a debut full-length, it’s a remarkable statement.
