Iridescence of Clouds

Ludvig Cimbrelius has explored the soft underbelly of electronic music for over a decade, and under the Illuvia alias he’s found a particularly radiant home. Iridescence of Clouds is his second album for the revered A Strangely Isolated Place label—an eight-track, seventy-minute immersion in the ambient-jungle crossover, where soaring euphoric pads drift over half-step kicks and Amen breaks, mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri and picked out by Bandcamp Daily as a January highlight. It’s a record that feels suspended, weightless, and quietly epic all at once.

The textures are the story. Opener Iridescence sets the tone with airy, church-like chords unfurling in slow motion over a cushioned half-step pulse, and the formula deepens rather than repeats. Sea of Crises lets an Amen break tumble through the haze, its snare rolls crisp against the pillowy pads, whilst State of Emergence pushes the drum work to the fore with a tougher, more insistent break. The careful restraint is what makes it work: Cimbrelius never lets the breaks bully the ambience, instead letting each element breathe in generous space, so the euphoria in Veil of Mist and the gentle, water-licked shimmer of Titicaca feel earned rather than instant.

Much of the record’s sumptuousness comes down to Irisarri’s mastering. He’s a master of the long decay, and here he gives the low end real body whilst keeping the high frequencies glassy and open—Wanderer’s sub bass warms the track without ever muddying its air, and the closing pair of Nirmala II and the nine-minute Sky Beyond Sky wash over you with a reverb so deep it feels like standing inside weather. The album’s dynamic range is generous, every peak and fade handled with care.

It’s a demanding listen at seventy minutes, and the pacing occasionally drifts into the same tranquil plateau, but that’s part of the album’s charm—it asks for patience and rewards it generously. Iridescence of Clouds is a confident, beautifully realised statement of the ambient-jungle sound, and one of the year’s most transportive records so far.
